red joined the firm as a partner in 1982, after eight years in solo practice. He enjoys an “AV” rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and maintains a substantial litigation practice which emphasizes personal injury, wrongful death and criminal defense. He is also sought after by other members of the bar as an effective mediator in both civil and criminal cases. Over the years, he has defended some of the most high profile criminal cases in the area, and once received the Thurgood Marshall Liberty Award from the American Civil Liberties Union for freeing a wrongfully accused and convicted death row inmate after eighteen years of incarceration.
Fred is a native of Idaho, and was admitted to practice law in 1973 after graduating from law school at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He attended undergraduate school at Brigham Young University and American University in Washington, D.C. while employed by the late Senator Frank F. Church.
Fred is certified by the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association as a civil and criminal trial specialist. He is also certified by the Idaho Supreme Court as a civil litigation mediator. He is an adjunct professor and visiting lecturer for trial practice at the University of Idaho College of Law in Moscow, Idaho. He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and serves on ACTL’s Idaho State Committee and its Teaching, Trial and Appellate Advocacy Committee. He is a member of the Idaho Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Evidence. He is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the American Bar Association and the Idaho State Bar and their sections on litigation practice.
Fred is a former president of the Idaho State Bar and a former president of the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association. He is a former member of the Board of Governors for the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and a former member of the Board of Directors for the Idaho Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Fred and his wife, Sidney, have two daughters. An angler and a wrangler, he is an avid fly-fisherman and fly tier and owns quarter horses and mules.
